Though it has been said that dark chocolate can help prevent
heart disease, reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks by lowering blood
pressure and bad cholesterol levels and also improving the body’s use of
insulin, but those benefits have not been confirmed by researches with large
number of people.
Now the scientists say that cocoa used to produce chocolate has
chemicals called flavanols which may help those mentioned above, so they want
to know whether it is really true. The scientists use flavanols in their
unadulterated form by planning a four-year study of 18,000 adults, who will
take capsules of pure cocos flavanols in what is being called the largest test
of its kind.
They divide the participants into two groups and each will
take two identical pills a day. While one group will take flavanols pills, the
other will get placebo pills.
Jo-Ann Manson, the researcher at the Brigham and Women’s
Hospital in Boston is the leader of such
a researcher.
Though flavonoids in cocoa are very good for health, but
during the manufacture of chocolate, many of them are destroyed and also sugar
with saturated fats are added to contribute to flavor instead. This is the
results why if we consume much more chocolate, we can get much more weight. The
scientists are working for this.
The Washington chocolatier like Steve Koumanelis said that
dark chocolate is increasingly popular among his customers because they just
decide they love it and most of them also have been reading all about the health
benefits of this kind of sweet.
He also remarks that whatever the outcome of the research
will be he is not worried about his business “People like the experience of
actually biting into a piece of chocolate, whatever their favorites are”
However the test is still in the early stage, the scientists
are not sure when the participants will be handed their first chocolate pills. In
the meantime, they will get their flavanolls the old fashioned way.
